NIA Dismisses Rumours of Ghana Card Validity Reduction

The Authority emphasized that the existing 10-year validity period is still in full effect

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has debunked widespread rumours suggesting that the validity of the Ghana Card will be shortened from its current 10-year duration.

In a statement signed by Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, Head of Corporate Affairs, the Authority confirmed that the card “remains valid for 10 years from the date of issuance,” as stipulated by law, and must be renewed thereafter.

The NIA clarified that recent comments made by Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku had been taken out of context. According to the statement, Mr. Deku did not announce any policy change but merely noted that future reviews might consider shorter update intervals in line with advancing technology.

The Authority emphasized that the existing 10-year validity period is still in full effect, as the card’s lifespan and changes in cardholders’ personal features make such a timeline appropriate.

The NIA urged the public to disregard misleading information and reaffirmed its commitment to providing Ghanaians with a secure, reliable, and future-proof national identity system.
