Barcelona Midfielder Gavi Sidelined for Up to Five Months Following Knee Surgery

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed his support for the young midfielder

Barcelona midfielder Gavi is expected to be out of action for up to five months after undergoing knee surgery.

The 21-year-old featured in the club’s first two matches of the season before injuring his right knee during a training session in August. The incident raised fears of a recurrence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he suffered in 2023 while on international duty with Spain.

Although medical scans confirmed Gavi had not re-torn his ACL, he required surgery to repair damaged cartilage in the knee.

“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus,”
Barcelona confirmed in a club statement.

“His recovery is expected to take approximately four to five months.”

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed his support for the young midfielder, highlighting Gavi’s impact on the team.

“He’s a player with a big heart and a lot of emotion,” Flick said.
“It’s not easy for the team because he brings so much quality, but we’ll all support him and help him return to his best.”

Gavi made his debut for Barcelona in 2021, becoming the fourth-youngest player to feature for the club. Since then, he has made 155 appearances, scored 10 goals, and won five trophies.

His previous ACL injury kept him sidelined for nearly 11 months between November 2023 and October 2024.

Barcelona currently sit second in La Liga, trailing leaders Real Madrid by five points, but with a game in hand.
