Ablekuma North By-Election Violence: Eight Convicted, Fined GH¢6,000 Each

Court fines each GH¢6,000 for unprovoked attacks during by-election at Methodist Church Polling Station

Eight men involved in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North by-election have been convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court.

Each of the convicts was fined 500 penalty units (equivalent to GH¢6,000), or in default, will serve 24 months in prison.

The individuals — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias “Bomba”) — appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025. All eight pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the by-election. Among the victims were Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and former MP for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Prosecutors revealed that while the victims were observing election proceedings, the accused launched an unprovoked attack—first assaulting Mrs. Koomson and Mr. Saana, then turning on Mr. Kwei.

The eight were charged with conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The trial, which began on Monday, August 26, was expedited after all defendants admitted to their roles in the attack. Sentencing was handed down today.
