Ken Agyapong’s Team Accuses NPP of Bias Towards Bawumia as ‘Establishment Choice’

Agyapong’s team accuses party leadership of bias, warns of growing discontent among grassroots over alleged favoritism toward Vice President Bawumia.

The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly criticized the party’s leadership for allegedly favoring Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the lead-up to the party’s presidential primaries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, and signed by campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng Esq., the Agyapong team condemned the use of the NPP’s official social media platforms to exclusively livestream Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing event. The team described the act as a betrayal of the unity and fairness the party claims to uphold.

“The use of the party’s official social media handles to stream only Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach,” the statement read.

According to the Agyapong campaign, this incident reflects a broader pattern of bias that has marred the party’s internal processes, aimed at providing an unfair advantage to Dr. Bawumia — a trend they claim was evident in previous internal contests as well.

Kwarteng further argued that these actions have damaged party cohesion and contributed significantly to the NPP’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections.

“Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” Kwarteng said, referencing Dr. Bawumia’s leadership role during the campaign.

The statement also criticized the continued promotion of the Vice President despite these electoral setbacks, urging the party to focus instead on reconciliation and rebuilding trust among its base.

“At this critical juncture, the focus should be on uniting and strengthening the party to restore hope and confidence. Instead, leadership is pushing forward the very candidate associated with our recent losses, shamelessly presenting him as the ‘establishment choice’ by granting him exclusive access and advantages,” it said.

The campaign warned that ongoing favoritism could force other aspirants to consider alternative paths, emphasizing that grassroots members will not remain silent.

“If this continues, leadership should not be surprised when other candidates take their destinies into their own hands. The grassroots will not be silenced while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!” the statement concluded.
