Chelsea have agreed to sell defender Renato Veiga to Villarreal in a deal worth up to £26 million, pushing the club’s total summer transfer sales past £250 million.
Veiga, 22, is set to sign a seven-year deal with the Spanish club and undergo a medical on Thursday. The transfer will see Villarreal pay close to their record fee to land the Portugal international.
Veiga joined Chelsea from FC Basel in 2024 for £12 million but made just one Premier League start in 18 appearances. He spent part of last season on loan at Juventus and was recently training away from the first team, having reportedly requested a switch to centre-back from his usual left-back position.
Despite limited game time, Chelsea will earn a significant profit on the defender. His departure brings Chelsea’s summer sales to approximately £251.7 million from 11 outgoing players — helping balance the club’s £277 million spending on nine new signings during a busy window.
The club’s biggest sales this summer include:
-
Noni Madueke to Arsenal – £48 million
-
Joao Felix to Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia) – up to £43.7 million
-
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton – £28 million
Chelsea are still active in the transfer market, with interest in Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons. They are also working to offload more players, including Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi, before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
