Brazilian star Neymar left the pitch in tears after Santos suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat at home to Vasco da Gama — the heaviest loss of his career.
It was the first time in history that Santos have conceded six goals at home in a Brazilian Serie A match. The defeat leaves the eight-time champions just two points clear of the relegation zone.
In the wake of the crushing loss, Santos parted ways with head coach Cleber Xavier just hours after the final whistle.
Philippe Coutinho, formerly of Liverpool and Aston Villa, scored twice for Vasco, who celebrated their first league win in six games — and their biggest league victory in 17 years.
“I’m ashamed,” Neymar told reporters. “I’m completely disappointed with our performance. The fans are absolutely right to protest — as long as it’s non-violent. If they want to curse or shout, they’re within their rights. Our attitude on the pitch today was terrible.
“I’ve never gone through something like this. The tears came from anger and frustration. I wish I could fix everything myself, but I can’t. Everyone needs to go home tonight and seriously reflect on what they want for this club.”
Neymar, 33, remains the world’s most expensive footballer following his £200 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. He rejoined his boyhood club Santos in January 2025 after terminating his contract with Saudi side Al-Hilal, and extended his stay with a six-month deal in June.
Since his return, Neymar has registered six goals and three assists in 21 appearances across all competitions, including three goals in 11 Serie A matches.
