Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a £40 million transfer for Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, with an agreement in principle now in place.

As reported earlier by BBC Sport, the two clubs had entered advanced negotiations over the midfielder, and sources now confirm that only minor details remain before the deal is finalised.

Once completed, Ramsey is expected to undergo a medical and sign personal terms, sealing his move to St James’ Park.

The transfer comes just days before Newcastle face Villa in their Premier League season opener at 12:30 BST on Saturday.

Ramsey, 24, is a product of Villa’s academy, having joined at the age of six. Since making his senior debut in 2019, he has gone on to make 167 appearances, scoring 17 goals and establishing himself as a key figure under manager Unai Emery.

A former England Under-21 international, Ramsey is known for his energy, ball-carrying ability, and attacking instincts from midfield — attributes that are expected to bolster Newcastle’s squad ahead of a competitive season.

He becomes the latest addition to Eddie Howe’s side, who have already secured Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Malick Thiaw from AC Milan in permanent deals.

Earlier this month, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from Southampton.
