Uttarkashi, India – More than 100 people are missing and at least one person has died following a devastating cloudburst that triggered flash floods in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Rescue operations are currently underway in the Uttarkashi district after a massive wave of water and debris surged down the mountains and into Dharali village on Tuesday. The flash flood submerged roads and buildings in its path.
Some army teams have been in Dharali since Tuesday, but other disaster response forces and district officials have been unable to reach the area due to damaged roads and heavy rainfall. According to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, approximately 130 people have been rescued so far in the Uttarkashi district.
The cloudburst—a sudden, intense downpour over a small area—occurred on Tuesday at around 1:30 p.m. India time. It caused the Kheerganga river to swell dramatically, sending tonnes of muddy water crashing down the hilly terrain, causing widespread destruction.
