Ghana Water Limited Bans Sale of Water from Hydrants, Sets One-Month Deadline

GWL bans hydrant use and launches inspection task force to curb illegal water sales nationwide.

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has announced a series of stringent measures to combat the growing problem of illegal water connections and the unauthorized commercial sale of water, particularly from Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) hydrants.

Mr. Mutawakilu confirmed that GWL has banned the use of fire hydrants across the country as part of its effort to protect water resources and ensure fair distribution.

“We have banned the use of fire hydrants, and the team is assessing those who sell water to tankers commercially,” he said. “Looking at the trend it is going, if we realise that out of 10 people, seven have illegally connected [to the hydrant] we will be forced to suspend.”

According to the GWL boss, preliminary assessments have shown a worrying rise in illegal connections, prompting the company to take immediate action. A special task force began operations on Tuesday, August 5, to inspect and verify all commercial water points and connections.

“The team started yesterday, and we are analysing the data, and by the end of the month, management will be able to put an end to this,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated.

He indicated that if the situation does not improve, GWL may be forced to impose further restrictions, including the suspension of tanker services in heavily affected areas.
