Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to lead the club for the next two decades, signaling a long-term vision despite enduring a turbulent debut season.
The 40-year-old Portuguese coach took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024 but oversaw a historically poor campaign, with United finishing 15th in the Premier League— their worst league position since the 1973-74 season.
Speaking ahead of the new season, Amorim shared his ambition: “I want to stay. I want to stay 20 [years]. That is my goal, and I truly believe in that.” However, he acknowledged that his future ultimately depends on results.
In his first 42 games in charge, Amorim recorded 17 wins, 8 draws, and 17 losses—an average of 1.40 points per game. The season ended without silverware or European qualification, capped off by a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and United’s 20th loss of the season.
Despite the challenges, Amorim remains optimistic as he prepares for his first full season, which begins with a difficult opener against Arsenal on August 17. He is under contract until 2027, with an option for an additional year, but admitted, “I’ve used all the credits. Now it’s time to start again.”
Amorim also reflected on the role of fortune in football longevity: “In some moments, I will be lucky. I’ve had a lot of luck during my managerial career, and my idea is to stay for many years.”
Looking ahead, he is confident that Manchester United can reclaim its place among the Premier League elite. He pointed to the club’s heritage, fanbase, and financial strength—even without Champions League revenue—as key pillars for a revival.
Amorim credited the club’s leadership for its strategic financial planning and emphasized the importance of building a new cultural identity at Old Trafford. As part of that transformation, he has established a six-man leadership group within the squad to promote accountability and shared responsibility.
Inspired by Sir Alex Ferguson’s era of sustained success, Amorim hopes to foster a culture of stability and resilience. While the road to recovery will be demanding, his clear commitment to a long-term project has set a tone of patience, ambition, and belief at Manchester United.
