Akwatia By-Election Set for September 2, EC Announces

This follows the unfortunate passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced that a by-election for the Akwatia Constituency will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

This follows the unfortunate passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission confirmed that the seat has become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, thereby necessitating a by-election.

Prospective candidates for the by-election can submit their nomination forms from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office of the EC.

Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Interested candidates are required to:

  • Download nomination forms from www.ec.gov.gh between July 30 and August 13, 2025.
  • Submit four copies of their completed forms.
  • Secure endorsements from two registered voters (one proposer and one seconder), along with 18 other registered voters within the Akwatia constituency.
  • Provide two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background, showing a full face and visible ears.
  • Include a signed declaration of consent to the nomination.

The filing fee for candidates is GHC10,000. However, a reduced fee of GHC7,500 will apply to female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The EC has urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to the established timelines and requirements, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible by-election in Akwatia.
