Two students of Nalerigu Senior High School were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in a late-night attack on the school’s campus on Saturday, July 26. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising serious concerns about student safety and regional security.
While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, preliminary local reports suggest a possible link to the protracted Bawku tribal conflict. Security agencies have yet to confirm any direct connection.
The tragic event unfolded on school grounds, leaving students and staff traumatized. Many students reportedly fled the campus or remained in hiding out of fear for their safety.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, the Headmaster of Nalerigu SHS, Mr. Mohammed Tibila, confirmed the deaths and expressed deep concern about the security of students. “This is a devastating moment for the entire school community. We urge authorities to act swiftly to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” he said.
The North East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is expected to meet in the coming days to assess the situation and determine the necessary security measures.
This incident comes amid a growing number of violent attacks across parts of the country, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security, particularly in conflict-prone regions.
