Bagbin Urges MPs to Shun Violence Ahead of Akwatia By-Election

He urged them to consider their responsibility and moral leadership

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a call to action to Members of Parliament (MPs) to promote peace and respect ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

He urged them to refrain from violence in both words and actions, emphasizing the need for civility in Ghana’s political processes.

Bagbin expressed concern over the rising tension and aggressive conduct in both electoral and parliamentary settings.

He noted that the behavior of MPs in the chamber has become increasingly hostile, with confrontational language and tone dominating debates.

The Speaker appealed to MPs to lead by example, toning down their rhetoric and working together in the spirit of national unity.

He urged them to consider their responsibility and moral leadership, saying, “Let’s remove totally the issue of violence from our lives, particularly our political lives — not only the elections but also in the House when you are making submissions.”

Bagbin’s call to action comes on the heels of a tense by-election in Ablekuma North, and he hopes that the Akwatia by-election will be conducted in a more peaceful and respectful manner.

He emphasized the importance of MPs working together and setting a positive example for the country.
