Zuarungu Senior High School in Ghana’s Upper East Region has been temporarily closed following a violent clash between students from the Frafra and Kusasi ethnic groups, reportedly triggered by a dispute over a stolen mobile phone.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, July 20, quickly escalated into chaos. Several campus facilities were set ablaze during the confrontation, prompting fears of further unrest and retaliation among students.
In response, Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga ordered the immediate closure of the school to prevent further violence and safeguard lives and property.
Police have arrested four students believed to be involved in the disturbances. However, one suspect is reported to have escaped from custody after allegedly seizing a police officer’s magazine during the incident.
Given the heightened tension and risk of reprisal attacks, security forces—including police and military personnel—have been deployed to escort students, particularly those from Bawku, back to their communities under tight protection.
Authorities have launched an investigation, and security operations are ongoing to restore calm and ensure the safety of students and staff. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
