GAF Closely Monitoring Bawku and Alavanyo – Defence Minister Omane Boamah

Military remains on high alert as government balances dialogue with decisive action in conflict-prone areas

Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has described the security situation in Bawku and Alavanyo as volatile, but assured the public that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is actively monitoring the regions and is fully prepared to respond to any escalation.

Delivering a defence sector update on Monday, July 21, as part of the Government Accountability Series, Dr. Boamah emphasized that the military has implemented robust security measures in Bawku, Alavanyo, and surrounding communities to maintain order and safeguard lives.

“We acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains volatile. The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring and has put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of the people and a lasting resolution of the conflict through dialogue,” he said.

The Minister reiterated the government’s dual approach of promoting peace through dialogue while ensuring that criminal actors do not exploit traditional or chieftaincy-related tensions.

“In doing so, we shall always separate crimes from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflict,” Dr. Boamah added.

His remarks come amid ongoing tensions in parts of the Upper East Region, where ethnic and chieftaincy disputes have continued to fuel insecurity and displacement.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace through a combination of legal enforcement and inclusive dialogue with affected communities.
