Asabee Declares Intent to Lead NPP, Urges Stronger Party Structure Before 2028 Elections

Stephen Asamoah Boateng says rebuilding party foundation is critical after 2024 defeat

Former Minister for Chieftaincy and seasoned politician, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has reaffirmed his commitment to helping rebuild the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. Speaking on two Kumasi-based radio stations on Wednesday evening, Asamoah Boateng emphasized that the party must first focus on strengthening its internal structures before selecting a new flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

Using the analogy of a house, the former Information Minister under President Kufuor stressed the importance of a solid foundation. “No building can remain standing if its base is weak. The same applies to the NPP—we must focus on constructing a well-structured foundation where all party departments function effectively before considering who should lead us into the next elections,” he said.

Leadership Ambition

Known widely as Asabee, Mr. Boateng openly expressed his desire to contest for the position of National Chairman of the NPP. He said his ambition stems from a deep conviction that the party needs a strong, visionary leader to steer it through a crucial rebuilding phase.

“In the wake of our loss in 2024, the NPP must undertake serious reforms. We need to reflect, reorganize, and reconnect with Ghanaians. I want to be the person who helps lead that transformation,” he said.

He added that the party’s path back to political relevance depends on its ability to implement meaningful change and become more appealing to the Ghanaian electorate.

Asabee’s declaration is expected to spark discussion within the party as it prepares for internal restructuring and leadership elections.
