President Mahama Unveils Plan to Build Six Modern Sports Stadia in New Regions

Government aims to boost sports infrastructure and equity across Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has announced an ambitious plan to construct six state-of-the-art sports stadia in Ghana’s newly created regions, as part of efforts to promote equitable access to sports infrastructure and talent development.

Speaking during a stop on his “Thank You Tour” in the Western North Region on Monday, July 15, President Mahama said the initiative is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is currently overseeing the design and planning stages.

“Under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, modern sports stadia will be built in the six newly created regions, as well as in other regions that currently lack such infrastructure,” the President told a crowd of local leaders and residents.

The project targets the six regions formed after the 2018 national referendum: Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo. These additions expanded Ghana’s number of administrative regions from 10 to 16, with the aim of decentralizing governance and accelerating regional development.

The planned stadia are part of a broader vision to create equal sporting opportunities across the country, particularly in underserved areas that have long lacked proper facilities to nurture young athletes.

President Mahama emphasized that the development of sports is not only crucial for national pride but also for youth empowerment, job creation, and community engagement.

Further details on timelines, funding, and specific locations are expected to be released by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in the coming weeks.
