Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has extended his support to former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson following her reported assault during the rerun of parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Monday, July 13, Minister Muntaka stated that he personally contacted Madam Koomson to express empathy and gather firsthand details of the incident.
“I reached out to Honourable Hawa Koomson to show my concern and to understand exactly what occurred,” he said. “She shared her account with me, and I assured her that I have directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to initiate a full investigation. I’ve encouraged her to cooperate fully with the police as they proceed.”
Minister Muntaka strongly condemned the violence that disrupted voting in the constituency and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding all perpetrators accountable, regardless of political ties.
“I’ve spoken directly with the IGP regarding the situation in Ablekuma North. Video evidence has been submitted, and clear directives have been issued. There will be no cover-ups—whether the offenders belong to our political party or any other,” he declared.
He also commended the government’s leadership for publicly denouncing the incident, calling it an important step in Ghana’s democratic progress.
“This level of violence has no place in our democracy,” Muntaka emphasized. “It’s disheartening that over three decades into our democratic journey, we’re still facing such incidents. However, I’m encouraged by the strong stance taken by our leadership. The Vice President has spoken out clearly, and even in the President’s absence abroad, she is actively leading efforts to maintain peace.”
