The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region following a deadly outbreak of tribal violence that claimed the life of a student and left two others injured.
The decision comes after two female day students were shot on their way to school on Thursday, June 26. A day later, a male student was fatally struck by a stray bullet inside his classroom during mock examinations.
The Acting Regional Director of Education said arrangements are being made to provide police escorts for students returning home, emphasizing the urgent need to ensure their safety.
“In light of the current security threat, the temporary closure is necessary to protect students and staff,” the director stated in a memo dated June 27. The Regional Directorate has also requested further support and guidance from GES leadership to manage the crisis.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with security agencies.
