Reuben Solomon Jabari, Branch Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Island City, has claimed that a political shift is occurring among individuals previously involved in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In an interview on Asempa FM and monitored by Mabeshtv.com, Mr. Jabari stated that many former galamsey operators, once aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are now turning their support toward the NDC.
“The most interesting thing is that all the galamsey operators who were tagged during the NPP’s term are now turning to the NDC member,” Jabari remarked.
He attributed this change in allegiance to growing dissatisfaction with how the NPP administration handled the illegal mining issue.
According to him, many of these individuals feel they were unfairly labelled and targeted during the government’s anti-galamsey campaigns, which intensified during the NPP’s tenure.
Mr. Jabari suggested that the NDC’s approach—centered on fairness and inclusivity—is appealing to those who feel marginalized by the current administration’s enforcement tactics.
His comments come amid ongoing national debate over the future of small-scale mining in Ghana. Both the NPP and NDC continue to face pressure to balance environmental protection with the economic needs of mining communities.
Although Jabari did not name any specific individuals, he expressed confidence that the NDC’s message is resonating with a segment of the population previously aligned with its political rival.
