Nine Killed in Austrian School Attack

Graz Mayor Confirms Fatalities in Secondary School Shooting; Area Secured

At least nine people have been killed and many more wounded in an attack at a secondary school in Graz, Austria, according to the city’s mayor.

Graz Mayor Elke Kahr was quoted by the Austrian news agency APA as stating that the attacker is also dead, and numerous injured individuals have been transported to the hospital following the shooting, which she described as a “terrible tragedy.”

Police did not immediately provide a specific death toll but confirmed “several” fatalities, operating under the assumption that there was only one attacker. APA video footage showed emergency workers loading a stretcher into an ambulance at the scene. The reports did not specify how many of the deceased were pupils.

A local police spokesman confirmed that the area has been secured, the school evacuated, and relatives of the victims and pupils are receiving support. “There is no further danger for the population, but there are several dead,” he told Austrian television.

Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper cited unconfirmed reports suggesting the suspect was a 22-year-old former student armed with two weapons – a pistol and a shotgun. Kronen Zeitung tabloid reported that a suspect had been found dead in a bathroom, though Reuters could not immediately confirm this detail.
