KIA’s Terminal 2 Expansion Kicks Off to Ease Terminal 3 Traffic Jam

Terminal 2 will now serve both domestic and international flights in a phased rollout

To ease the heavy congestion at Terminal 3 and enhance airport operations, the Ministry of Transport has launched expansion work on Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The upgraded Terminal 2 will serve both domestic and international flights, with the rollout planned in two phases.

This initiative, jointly announced by the Ministry and KIA management, aims to relieve the rising passenger traffic burden on Terminal 3, which has been increasingly crowded over recent years.

During a visit to the airport, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari emphasized that the expansion is a key part of a larger strategy to boost the airport’s capacity for handling more passengers and cargo efficiently.

He stated, “Terminal 3 experiences heavy congestion during peak hours. That’s why we divided Terminal 2 into two sections—one for domestic flights and the other for international flights—so we can shift some traffic from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, creating more space and comfort for travelers.”

The Ministry anticipates that the upgraded Terminal 2 will greatly enhance the travel experience and streamline operations at Ghana’s busiest airport.
