The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) will soon bear a new name to honor the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, recognizing his vital role in founding the institution.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the inauguration of UHAS’s fourth substantive governing council in Accra on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Minister Iddrisu described the renaming as a “posthumous tribute to his legacy as a distinguished statesman, former President, and respected academic.”
He confirmed that the university will henceforth be known as John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to advancing higher education, Iddrisu assured the university community that ongoing infrastructure projects at the Ho and Hohoe campuses, including the laboratory complex, will be completed with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
He also shared that the Roads Minister has committed to upgrading the university’s internal roads as part of a nationwide effort to improve public university facilities.
Chairing the newly sworn-in 17-member Governing Council is Professor Kodzo Gavua, who pledged to build on the university’s legacy as a premier healthcare training institution in Ghana and beyond.
He emphasized prioritizing student and staff accommodation and promised a collaborative approach to addressing institutional challenges.
The council includes prominent academics and professionals such as Vice Chancellor Professor Lydia Aziato, Emeritus Professor Fred Newton Binka, and representatives from various university bodies and associations, working together to steer UHAS toward greater growth and excellence.
This renaming and new council inauguration mark a significant milestone for UHAS as it continues to solidify its status as Ghana’s sole public university dedicated entirely to health sciences education and research.
