NRSA to Assemblies: Take Down Illegal Billboards by June 2 or Face Court

Defiant Assemblies Snub NRSA Meeting, Now Face Legal Action Over Billboards

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has delivered a strong ultimatum to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region: dismantle all unauthorized billboards from road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025—or be dragged to court.

This decisive stance follows a failed attempt at dialogue, as several targeted assemblies failed to attend a critical compliance meeting convened by the NRSA.

Speaking to the media, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba expressed frustration over what he called a “defiant posture” from the assemblies.

“We invited all relevant assemblies through the Ministry of Local Government. Unfortunately, there was confusion, and some assumed the meeting involved assemblies outside Accra. Those actually required to attend simply didn’t show up,” Amaliba explained.

He added that the NRSA initially issued a 21-day removal deadline, hoping to offer extensions during the meeting. However, the no-show has forced the Authority’s hand.

“We interpret their absence as deliberate noncompliance. Since they’ve chosen to ignore the directive, we’ll meet them in court,” Amaliba stated firmly.

The NRSA emphasizes that this crackdown is crucial to safeguarding public safety, which it warns is being compromised by the proliferation of unauthorized roadside billboards.
