“I’ve Always Defended the Judiciary” – Dame Speaks on CJ Representation

Dame insists legal backing for Chief Justice Torkornoo was ethical and justified under the Constitution

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has dismissed claims of a conflict of interest surrounding his decision to represent the embattled Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, in a case currently before the Supreme Court.

Justice Torkornoo, who was recently suspended by President John Dramani Mahama under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, is challenging the legitimacy of a committee set up to review petitions for her removal.

In a suit filed on Wednesday, May 21, she is seeking an interlocutory injunction to pause the committee’s proceedings and has requested the Supreme Court to disqualify Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu from the case, questioning their neutrality.

Responding to criticism of his involvement, Dame strongly defended his actions, asserting that he acted lawfully and ethically.

“It is time for good men in this country to speak up for what is right,” Dame declared in a media interview on the same day. “From the beginning of my tenure, I have consistently defended the judiciary against unwarranted attacks. We must stand for truth and not allow misinformation to prevail unchallenged.”

The legal action, filed by Dame on Torkornoo’s behalf, names Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah as respondents.

Torkornoo is seeking a court order to restrain the committee, composed of the second to sixth respondents, from continuing any investigation into the removal petitions until the matter is conclusively resolved by the Supreme Court.
