Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has confirmed that the Presidential jet is currently unfit for service and is undergoing maintenance abroad.
He revealed that the aircraft’s decline happened during the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
This follows a January 2025 dispute when former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul questioned President John Mahama’s choice to avoid using the jet for official international travel, insisting the plane was in good shape and should replace commercial or private flights.
Dr. Boamah explained that the jet is now undergoing a “three-month therapy” to bring it back to a “fairly usable” condition, though he did not specify when the repairs started. Responding to criticism from some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members regarding Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s recent use of a private jet on May 22, Dr. Boamah pointed out the jet’s fuel tank corrosion as a key problem.
“The Presidential jet has been in the ‘hospital’ abroad… it is unfit for use presently,” he stated, adding a pointed message to the NPP, who suffered heavy electoral defeats recently.
