Transport Fares to Drop by 15% Starting May 24

Fare adjustment follows currency gains and lower fuel costs, offering relief to commuters nationwide

Starting Saturday, May 24, 2025, public transport fares across the country will see a 15% reduction.

This move follows successful talks between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.

The fare cut reflects recent economic improvements, including the strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar, which has led to a drop in fuel costs.

The decision is also influenced by calls from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association for lower auto parts prices in light of the favorable exchange rate.

Confirming the development, Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), said the timing is intended to align with current market conditions and bring relief to commuters.

“We’ve agreed on a 15% reduction in lorry fares effective Saturday,” Imoro stated. “Although spare parts dealers have pledged to reduce their prices, those changes haven’t fully materialized yet. Lubricant prices also remain unchanged, but we believe this 15% cut is a fair starting point.”
