Agyapong Backs Ameyaw-Akumfi as Surety in GH¢10m Bail Ruling

Agyapong’s courtroom gesture signals solidarity amid high-profile legal proceedings

Kennedy Agyapong, the former MP for Assin Central, has stepped forward as one of the guarantors for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, who was recently granted bail set at GH¢10 million.

The former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) appeared in court on Monday, May 26, where the judge ruled that two sureties must back the bail with proof of ownership of landed property in the Greater Accra Region.

Agyapong, present in court, voluntarily offered to serve as one of the sureties as legal efforts continue to satisfy the court’s bail terms.

Earlier, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, requested bail on recognisance, highlighting the professor’s decades of service in government and academia—including stints as Education Minister, Ports and Harbours Minister, and as a Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Coast. His role as former Chair of the Public Procurement Authority was also noted.

The defence emphasized Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s age—80 years—and ongoing health concerns that necessitated two recent surgeries, arguing these factors justified more lenient bail terms.

Though the Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, did not object to bail, he recommended conditions matching those of the case’s first accused, who received a GH¢15 million bail.

Ultimately, Justice Comfort Tasiame granted bail at a reduced GH¢10 million, with the requirement of two sureties who must verify ownership of property in Greater Accra—one of whom is now confirmed to be Kennedy Agyapong.
