Energy Minister John Jinapor has rejected accusations that he is simply complaining about the nation’s energy challenges, stressing that his focus is on finding practical solutions.
His comments come after criticism from energy experts and Walewale MP Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, who accused him of using “fear tactics” during an interview.
In an interview on May 19, 2025, Mr. Jinapor clarified that his appearance before Parliament’s Energy Committee was aimed at presenting facts and offering solutions, not venting frustration.
He stated, “I understand grumbling very well, and I don’t think that when you present facts before a committee, that can be termed as grumbling. Unless I, as a minister, needed to hide those facts.”
Jinapor highlighted the various steps his ministry has taken to address the energy crisis, including resolving Karpowership’s potential shutdown, expanding generation capacity, and initiating reforms to stabilize the sector.
“The facts are that Karpowership threatened to shut down, and we resolved the matter. That’s not grumbling, that’s solving the problem.”
He also pointed out the reduction of load shedding from 70-80 megawatts to a manageable level through new plants, the establishment of a gas processing committee, and progress on reducing reliance on liquid fuel. “We are solving the problem,” he emphasized.
On the issue of fuel stock levels, Jinapor confirmed that new fuel orders were on the way, addressing Parliament’s concerns with updated data.
“We are not in crisis, we are doing fairly well,” he reassured. “Yes, we have challenges, but that’s why we were voted into power — to solve those challenges.”
