Andy Appiah Kubi, the lawyer representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako—better known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—has joined party officials and family members in a desperate search to locate him.
This urgent search comes after reports emerged that Wontumi was taken to a hospital following his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi, alongside NPP executives and family, was seen moving between hospitals trying to confirm Wontumi’s whereabouts. Their first stop was the 37 Military Hospital, where a doctor confirmed he was not admitted there.
Undeterred, the group then headed to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), only to be met with further disappointment when they could not locate him there either.
As of now, Wontumi’s current location remains unknown.
The outspoken Chairman was initially arrested by EOCO after voluntarily reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27, 2025. The previous day, May 26, he had been formally charged with illegal mining activities.
According to a statement from Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, head of the CID’s Public Affairs Unit, Wontumi faces allegations related to unauthorized mining, pollution of water bodies, and illegal entry into a forest reserve.
The police noted that Wontumi cooperated fully during the investigations, providing his statement and being granted bail with two sureties.
His detention by EOCO follows an earlier failed attempt by security forces to arrest him on May 23, 2025.
