The scheduled confirmation of Hon. Kwasi Amankwaah as District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Sekyere Kumawu District was postponed today due to an unresolved Presiding Member (PM) election, leaving the process in limbo.
Ahead of the DCE confirmation, Electoral Commission (EC) official Atta Nyamekye Kessi oversaw the PM elections, which involved 36 Assembly members.
In the first round of voting, none of the candidates met the constitutional requirement of a two-thirds majority, as mandated by Article 244 of the 1992 Constitution. The results were as follows: Addai Abankwa Kwame led with 17 votes, followed by Richard Gyamfi with 16 votes, and Sampson Opoku Amankwaah with 3 votes.
A re-run was promptly organized between the top two candidates—Richard Gyamfi and Addai Abankwa Kwame. However, the second round also ended inconclusively. Gyamfi received 22 votes, Abankwa secured 13, and one ballot was rejected—still falling short of the required majority.
Due to the stalemate, the EC officially announced that the confirmation of the DCE nominee could not proceed without the election of a Presiding Member.
A new date has been set for the confirmation vote: Monday, May 19, 2025.
The Assembly now faces mounting pressure to resolve its internal leadership vacuum before moving forward with critical local government appointments.
