The five-member committee appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions filed against the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, officially begins its hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, the committee was formed under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State. Its mandate comes in the wake of a prima facie case established against the Chief Justice.
However, the timing of the suspension has drawn criticism. Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Effia, has questioned the logic behind suspending the Chief Justice nearly three weeks before the committee convened.
Speaking on Eyewitness News’ “Point Blank” segment on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Boamah-Nyarko voiced frustration over the lack of a clearly defined schedule for the committee’s work.
“The Chief Justice was suspended on April 22, and now—almost three weeks later—the hearings are just beginning. If the committee wasn’t ready to start immediately, why suspend her so early? And where is the timeline for their work? Every serious committee operates with a clear deadline,” he argued.
