Mahama Forgives Sammy Gyamfi Over Dollar Gift to Agradaa

President accepts apology but issues stern warning to uphold public trust and ethical standards.

President John Dramani Mahama has decided not to pursue further disciplinary action against Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following the emergence of a controversial video showing him handing an undisclosed sum of U.S. dollars to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage, which quickly went viral, sparked significant public backlash and raised concerns about potential violations of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct governing public officials.

Civil society organizations and opposition lawmakers demanded Gyamfi’s dismissal, arguing that his actions eroded public trust and fell short of the ethical standards required of government appointees.

However, President Mahama has opted to accept Gyamfi’s public apology and bring the matter to a close, albeit with a strong caution.

At a press briefing, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the President’s decision, stating that while the incident was unfortunate, it would not result in further sanctions.

He emphasized that Mr. Gyamfi, along with all public officials, has been warned to strictly comply with ethical guidelines and maintain conduct that upholds the integrity of public service.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu reaffirmed the President’s commitment to transparency and good governance but noted that, under the circumstances, removal from office was not warranted.
