David Beckham has called out Minnesota United for a lack of sportsmanship following their 4-1 victory over his Inter Miami side, criticizing the club’s social media behavior in the aftermath of the match.
The defeat marked Inter Miami’s heaviest loss since Lionel Messi joined the team in July 2023. Despite a second-half goal from the 37-year-old Argentina captain, the club slumped to a fourth loss in five matches across all competitions.
While the result itself was a blow, Beckham—co-owner of Inter Miami—was more incensed by a post-match Instagram update from Minnesota United. The club shared a photo captioned “Pink Phony Club,” referencing Miami’s iconic pink kits and alluding to Chappell Roan’s song Pink Pony Club. The post also featured a snapshot of the league table showing Minnesota leapfrogging Inter.
Beckham didn’t stay silent. He responded directly in the comments section, writing:
“Show a little respect, be elegant in triumph.”
Minnesota, managed by Welsh coach Eric Ramsay, appeared unfazed by the criticism. They followed up with another post featuring a fan banner from the match reading:
“History over hype, culture over cash,”
with the words “hype” and “cash” highlighted in pink.
Beckham replied again:
“Respect over everything.”
Despite boasting a star-studded lineup—including former Barcelona players Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba—Inter Miami has had a rocky run of form. They won last season’s Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record but exited in the first round of the MLS playoffs.
In November, the club appointed former Argentina and Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano as head coach. However, Inter recently fell short in the Concacaf Champions Cup semi-finals and now sit fourth in the MLS Eastern Conference.
