A heartbreaking accident on the Takoradi to Agona Nkwanta highway in Ghana’s Western Region has left nine people dead and several others in critical condition. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, between 5:00pm and 6:00pm.
Reports indicate that a passenger vehicle traveling from Mankesim to Tarkwa collided with an oncoming truck. The impact sent both vehicles tumbling into a nearby pit. The injured victims are currently receiving medical care at Takoradi Government Hospital and Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been moved to the mortuary.
Charlotte Kaku, a local trader who witnessed the incident, explained that the crash happened when the Mankesim passenger vehicle tried to overtake a truck bound for Abidjan but failed. She recounted the tragic scene, noting that the driver of the Mankesim bus died instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital.
Among the deceased are a mother and her son, reportedly on their way to a funeral, and a young woman believed to be an SHS student. The situation has been complicated by the theft of personal belongings, including phones, from the accident site, hindering efforts to identify victims and notify their families. Authorities are continuing efforts to track down the relatives of the deceased and those in critical condition.
