A city-wide ban on noise-making officially begins today, May 12, 2025, in Accra as part of sacred preparations for the Ga people’s annual Homowo festival.
Lasting until June 12, 2025, the one-month directive prohibits all forms of loud noise, including drumming, the use of loudspeakers, tambourines, funeral activities, and street evangelism.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, emphasized that the restriction applies to all individuals, communities, and institutions within its jurisdiction.
To ensure compliance, a dedicated task force—working with REGSEC, local assemblies, and the Ghana Police Service—will patrol and enforce the directive. Offenders risk facing legal consequences.
Residents are reminded that the Homowo festival is observed on varying dates across the Ga State. As such, traditional areas such as Osu, La, Nungua, Tema, Kpone, Prampram, and Ningo will announce their respective bans and celebration timelines after June 12, 2025.
