The 69-year-old Pope steps into his role amid global praise, with U.S. and European leaders highlighting his significance

Global political and religious leaders have extended their congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first American to lead the Catholic Church.

The newly elected pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago, made his debut appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to a jubilant crowd in St. Peter’s Square, celebrating the beginning of his papacy.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the election of the 69-year-old Pope a source of national pride, posting on Truth Social: “What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!” Trump recently sparked controversy by posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the occasion as a “deeply profound moment of joy” for Catholics worldwide. Meanwhile, Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, currently acting as the Church of England’s senior bishop, praised Pope Leo XIV’s dedication to justice and spiritual leadership.

He emphasized the Pope’s call for Christians to bridge divisions within and beyond the Church.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also offered his congratulations, expressing gratitude for the Vatican’s ongoing support for Ukraine amid the war. On X, he emphasized the importance of the Holy See’s stance against Russian aggression and voiced hope for continued moral support in Ukraine’s pursuit of peace.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic convert, joined the chorus of well-wishers, saying, “I’m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!”
