Ghana’s Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has inaugurated a 10-member taskforce to lead the development of a strategic plan for establishing a new national airline. The move forms part of broader efforts to revitalize the country’s aviation sector and position Ghana as a key air transport hub in West Africa.
The taskforce is chaired by Charles Asare, former Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, and is expected to develop a roadmap for launching a sustainable and competitive national carrier.
At the inauguration ceremony, Minister Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to re-entering the airline industry and capitalizing on the country’s existing aviation infrastructure.
“We have world-class facilities at our national airport, yet other airlines are the ones reaping the benefits. It’s time for Ghanaians to claim a fair share,” he said.
“We are the gateway to Africa and must position ourselves as the aviation hub of the continent. That vision cannot be realized without active participation in the airline industry. This taskforce has been formed by the President to ensure we seize that opportunity.”
He added that the Ministry of Transport aims to make Ghana a regional hub across all transport sectors—including air, sea, and road—by improving connectivity within West Africa and beyond.
Taskforce Chair Charles Asare, speaking on behalf of the team, pledged their full dedication to delivering a comprehensive and actionable plan for a successful national airline.
