Afenyo-Markin Collaborates with Police After Alleged Assault During ‘Save the Judiciary’ Protest

Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin reports to police as investigations unfold into alleged altercation during protest.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has voluntarily reported to assist with investigations following an alleged altercation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on May 5, 2025.

According to the Police, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is looking into claims that Afenyo-Markin assaulted a uniformed police officer at Parliament House’s entrance. The investigation was triggered by a formal request from the CID to Parliament Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, who instructed the Effutu MP to fully cooperate.

In line with this directive, Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to aid in the ongoing probe.

Interestingly, the Police have also launched a parallel investigation into a counter-petition filed by Afenyo-Markin, claiming that he himself was assaulted by the same officer, Constable Forson. According to his version of events, the incident occurred as he approached a police barricade with fellow demonstrators to present a petition advocating for judicial independence. He alleges that Constable Forson struck him on the left side of his chest, leaving him stunned and short of breath. Afenyo-Markin was reportedly assisted by parliamentary security and other demonstrators, who took him to a rest area to recover before continuing his protest.

The officer involved allegedly fled the scene after the incident, which has raised concerns about evading responsibility.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that both investigations are actively underway, with further updates expected as the cases progress.
