Prof Adei: Mahama Off to a Strong Start, But Must Stay Consistent

Prof Adei says early achievements are commendable but urges long-term focus and caution against overpraising

Renowned economist and governance expert, Professor Stephen Adei, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for a commendable start to his presidency, following the completion of his highly anticipated 120-day social contract with the people of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, May 7, Prof. Adei remarked, “Anyone being objective would agree he has done very well.” He highlighted notable early achievements such as critical policy reversals, a leaner government structure, and the revival of stalled criminal investigations.

Despite the praise, Prof. Adei urged caution against excessive optimism. Drawing parallels to President Akufo-Addo’s initial term—where early success was followed by later disappointment—he warned Ghanaians to avoid repeating the mistake of prematurely idolizing a leader.

“We must be very cautious in heaping praise on John at this stage,” he said. “Akufo-Addo started strong, but by his second term, public confidence had deteriorated significantly.”

Prof. Adei emphasized that while Mahama’s initial performance is promising, lasting impact depends on sustained effort and adaptability. “What matters most is that he keeps the momentum, fixes emerging issues, and truly delivers the Ghana we all hope for,” he concluded.
