Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has called on all stakeholders to work together to bring an end to the ongoing Bawku conflict and establish lasting peace.
The violent clash between the Kusasis and Mamprusis has escalated in recent months, leading to numerous casualties. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is currently spearheading a mediation process aimed at resolving the crisis.
During a visit to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region on Monday as part of the NPP’s national Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sorrow over the violence, stressing that the conflict is between two groups with a shared history and culture. He called for an immediate ceasefire and urged unity between the warring factions.
“I am deeply saddened by the ongoing violence and the loss of innocent lives. The Kusasis and Mamprusis are one people, and this conflict should never have escalated. We speak the same language, have intermarried—we are united,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also called for strong support for the mediation efforts led by the Asantehene, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in restoring peace. He condemned the politicization of the conflict, accusing some individuals of using the situation for personal political gain.
“The politicization of the Bawku crisis is a tragedy. Some are exploiting it for narrow political interests, undermining the peace process,” he remarked.
He urged all political leaders to refrain from using chieftaincy issues for political advantage, specifically criticizing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their role in this. He concluded by expressing hope that the ongoing mediation will lead to a peaceful resolution.
“I pray the mediation team, led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, succeeds in bringing lasting peace to Bawku, and I call on all parties to fully cooperate with the process,” Dr. Bawumia said.
