Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has announced his withdrawal from the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing serious security concerns following a violent incident in Kumasi.
The decision follows a stabbing incident involving a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who was part of Unity Hall’s Jama group. The group had been invited by Agyapong’s team to perform at a gathering held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama.
According to sources close to Agyapong, a prominent supporter of the former MP gave money to the Jama group during the event. Shortly after, a group of heavily built men, reportedly armed and allegedly linked to the NPP, stormed the venue and forcibly took the money.
The confrontation quickly escalated, with gunshots reported and one Jama group member sustaining stab wounds during the clash. The injured student was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Agyapong’s team has filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command regarding the incident.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Kennedy Agyapong confirmed his withdrawal from the tour, expressing deep concern for the safety of his supporters.
“Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to pull out because lives are threatened. I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can do his campaign,” he stated.
Agyapong emphasized his commitment to seeking justice for the injured student, while stepping aside to prioritize the safety of his team and supporters.
