Education Minister Inaugurates New University of Ghana Governing Council

Council tasked with advancing academic excellence, infrastructure growth, and research funding

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Friday, April 25, officially inaugurated the new Governing Council of the University of Ghana at a ceremony held in Accra.

The newly constituted 18-member council is chaired by Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew and has been mandated to spearhead strategic policy initiatives aimed at strengthening the University’s academic and infrastructural development.

In his address following the swearing-in ceremony, Minister Iddrisu announced the government’s commitment to enhancing research capabilities in higher education institutions. He revealed that the National Research Fund will be operationalized this year, with an initial allocation of GHC50 million to support impactful research across the country’s universities.

“The President has asked me to assure you that this year, the government will operationalize the National Research Fund,” he stated. “An amount of GHC50 million has already been earmarked for its implementation.”

He further urged the University of Ghana to explore legitimate public-private partnerships as a means to expand both academic and residential infrastructure, enabling the institution to accommodate a growing student population and maintain high academic standards.
