Ghana to Begin Issuing Chip-Embedded Passports on April 28

Ghana to Enhance Passport Security and Streamline Application Process with New E-Passports

Ghana will begin issuing chip-embedded passports starting Monday, April 28, 2025, as announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The upgraded passports, first introduced on December 2, 2024, are equipped with enhanced biometric features designed to simplify travel and strengthen document security. Each passport contains a microchip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and photographic data, along with advanced anti-fraud features, including both visible and hidden security markers.

The new e-passports, which will replace the current biometric passports, are crafted to meet international standards while also reflecting Ghana’s cultural identity. The design incorporates iconic Adinkra symbols such as Fawohodie (Freedom and Independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (Democracy and Cooperation).

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, Mr. Ablakwa explained that the new passports are part of a broader reform initiative aimed at enhancing passport security, eliminating intermediaries, and ensuring greater transparency in the application process. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to providing a seamless, citizen-focused passport service that is easily accessible and free of third-party interference.

This rollout is part of a comprehensive reform package planned for 2025, which includes 24-hour passport processing, courier delivery services, an electronic tracking system, and a 30% reduction in application fees.

Chip-embedded passports, already in use by many countries, offer stronger protection against identity theft and fraud. Mr. Ablakwa highlighted the initiative as an important step in the government’s ongoing efforts to digitize public services and modernize Ghana’s passport system.
