Sam George Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Anti-LGBTQI Bill

MP Sam George Unyielding in His Advocacy for Anti-LGBTQI Legislation

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, and Ningo Prampram MP, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his firm and unchanged position regarding the Anti-LGBTQI Bill currently before Ghana’s Parliament.

Sam George confirmed that he has resubmitted the Private Member’s Bill and is awaiting a call from Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to advance its progress.

The MP emphasized his continued opposition to LGBTQI activities in Ghana, stating, “I have not changed my position on the anti-LGBTQI Bill. I have laid the Private Member’s Bill before parliament,” and adding that LGBTQI practices are an abomination that should not be accepted in the country.

Sam George has been a prominent advocate for the bill, which aims to criminalize LGBTQI activities in Ghana. Supporters of the bill argue that it aligns with Ghana’s cultural and religious values, while critics maintain that it infringes upon fundamental human rights.

Recently, President John Dramani Mahama suggested that the controversial bill would have a greater chance of success and wider acceptance if it were introduced as a government-sponsored initiative. During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, President Mahama proposed that Ghana’s cultural and moral values could be more effectively promoted through an educational curriculum focused on family values. He stated, “For the bill to have broader legitimacy and a higher chance of success, it should ideally come with government backing.”
