Violence Escalates in Bawku: Majority Leader’s House Torched Amid Unrest
Ayariga's Residence Torched Amid Rising Tensions in Bawku

Unidentified youth have set fire to the residence of Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga in Bawku, further escalating the already volatile situation in the town, which is gripped by a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.
The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions following a deadly clash on Wednesday between youth groups and law enforcement, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries. Security sources confirm that the military has been deployed to strategic locations to prevent further attacks.
The violence reportedly began when a youth faction attempted to forcibly remove market women from a rival group, leading to a confrontation with police and a subsequent exchange of gunfire. The unrest also saw the torching of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s residence and other police facilities.
Authorities have increased patrols in an effort to stabilize the area, but the atmosphere remains tense. Wednesday’s violence also led to the destruction of a police barracks, a police vehicle, and the private residences of three police officers.
Law enforcement agencies, including the police and military, have brought the immediate violence under control, but the situation in Bawku remains highly charged.
