State Authority Crucial for Bawku Peace, Says Former EPA Boss Krugu

Bawku Peace Hinges on Decisive State Action, Says Ex-EPA Chief

Former EPA Chief Executive Officer Dr. John Kingsley Krugu has asserted that the government is the only entity capable of establishing lasting peace in the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

Dr. Krugu highlighted the discontent among Bawku residents regarding the government’s handling of the recurring violence and unrest.

Speaking in Accra, he emphasized the state’s essential role in asserting its authority and enforcing the law decisively in such disputes.

“When you have a whole state declaring something as illegal… and then somebody gets up to say that despite all of that, I am also a chief, I don’t think that is a difficult question to answer. It is up to the state to act,” Dr. Krugu stated. He drew a parallel to how the state would handle any individual acting illegally, emphasizing that the government has a clear responsibility to intervene in the Bawku conflict, which stems from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute causing significant instability in the Upper East Region.
