Nigerian Champion Segun Olanrewaju Dies After Collapsing in Accra Fight

The boxing community is in shock following the tragic death of former West African light-heavyweight champion, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a fight in Ghana on Saturday.
The 40-year-old Nigerian boxer was participating in an undercard match at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League, held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. His opponent was Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu, known as “Power.”
Eyewitness reports and widely shared video footage depict the sudden and unexpected collapse of Olanrewaju in the ring. Despite the bout being described as competitive and friendly, with Olanrewaju reportedly leading on points, he lost consciousness.
Olanrewaju, a highly regarded figure in Nigerian boxing and a former national and regional titleholder, passed away despite immediate medical intervention. His death has sent ripples of sadness through the boxing fraternity.
