Gov’t Pledges Support for Legal Miners, Rules Out Ban on Small-Scale Mining – Sammy Gyamfi
Government to regulate and empower small-scale miners with legal documentation while ensuring all gold sales go through the upcoming GoldBod initiative.

The government has no intention of banning small-scale mining but is committed to supporting miners who operate within the legal framework, says Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
Addressing stakeholders in Bolgatanga on March 26, 2025, Gyamfi reassured miners in the Upper East and North East Regions that those with valid documentation would receive government backing.
This support includes access to mining concessions, specialized training, and logistical assistance to promote responsible mining.
He further stressed that all extracted gold should be sold exclusively to the government through the soon-to-be-launched GoldBod initiative. This measure aims to channel gold sales into the national economy, preventing unauthorized transactions with foreign or unlicensed local buyers.
“To make licensing easier, we are decentralizing the process at the district level and allocating designated mining areas to encourage responsible operations. Once mining is completed, sell your gold to a licensed Ghanaian buyer under GoldBod, as they are authorized to purchase on behalf of the government,” Gyamfi stated.
